Cosmetic Vein Treatment Q & A

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins occur when small valves in the veins weaken and malfunction. These tiny valves work against gravity to stop blood from flowing backward through your veins. When the valves aren’t functioning normally, blood pools in the veins and creates the twisted and discolored veins that are visible on the surface of your skin.

Varicose veins most often occur in your legs because all the standing and walking you do increases pressure in the veins of your lower body. Spider veins are a variation of varicose veins that affect small veins very near the surface of your skin.

Should I be worried about varicose veins?

Many people experience no symptoms with varicose veins and consider them a cosmetic concern. Other people, however, are bothered by aching pain, swelling, and even open sores in the affected regions. Known as venous insufficiency or venous reflux, these concerning symptoms typically worsen over time as the condition progresses.

Regardless of whether you’re concerned about their appearance or are experiencing discomfort, noninvasive or minimally invasive treatment options can effectively eliminate these superficial veins without surgery and without extensive downtime.

What is the treatment for varicose veins?

In the past, surgery (vein stripping) was required to effectively remove anything but the smallest varicose veins. Most patients required four weeks or more to heal and return to full activity after vein stripping.

Advances in medical technology, however, make it possible for Dr. Gujja to treat varicose veins without surgery from the convenience and comfort of the Long Island Heart & Vascular facility. Rather than surgically “stripping” the varicose vein from your body, these advanced treatments use various methods to block blood flow to the vein, which causes it to collapse and die. Your body absorbs the cellular debris left behind as waste, reroutes the blood flow to a healthy vein, and any appearance of the treated vein fades.

Advanced treatments for varicose veins at Long Island Heart & Vascular include:

  • The ClosureFast™ technique, which uses radiofrequency energy to shrink and collapse the targeted vein
  • The VenaSeal™ method, which utilizes a medical adhesive to seal the affected vein
