Endovenous Treatment Q & A

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins develop when small valves within your veins become weak or damaged. These flap-like valves typically open and close periodically to stop blood from flowing backward through the vein. When they aren’t functioning correctly, blood flows the wrong way and begins to pool. This causes the vein to twist and swell and become visible along the surface of your skin.

Most varicose veins occur in surface veins of the legs. Unlike arterial blood, which is flowing downward from your heart to your legs, blood in your veins is traveling back toward the heart and must work against gravity to reach its destination. This puts extra pressure on your leg veins and may be why varicose veins are often found in the thighs and lower legs.

What is the goal of endovenous treatment?

Unlike surgical removal, which involves stripping the affected vein from your leg, endovenous treatment focuses on blocking blood supply to the vein. This causes the vein to die, and other veins transport that blood. The cellular debris left by the dying vein is absorbed through your lymph system as waste.

What treatments do you use to treat varicose veins?

At Long Island Heart & Vascular, Dr. Gujja uses minimally invasive treatments that eliminate the varicose vein while ensuring faster healing time, less discomfort, and decreased risk of surgical complications such as infection.

ClosureFast™ is one such therapy. It uses radiofrequency energy to cause targeted veins to collapse and seal. This procedure is performed in the office and requires only local anesthesia to prevent discomfort. You can expect to return to normal activity within 2-3 days. Routine walking is recommended throughout your recovery phase, but you may need to restrict heavy lifting and/or prolonged standing for a few weeks.

VenaSeal™ is another minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins that uses a medical adhesive rather than heat to seal the targeted vein. It’s a painless procedure that eliminates the need for multiple injections to prevent discomfort. Most patients report little to no discomfort during the procedure other than a mild pulling sensation in the area being treated.
